SUE ARROWSMITH

Sue Arrowsmith's work is inspired by her photographs of  flora, foliage, falling blossom, weeping willows and the trees she passes on her regular walks.  Her photographs are projected onto a primed sheet of aluminium coated with watercolour or gilded metal onto which she paints a dense mass of lines, foliage, blossom, seeds, that undulate and shimmer across the panel.  Sue explores the energy of space, light and the constant interweaving of abstract form and nature which she captures elegantly and brilliantly  in her work.

Increasingly, Arrowsmith has been engaging with metallic ink, preparing the ink and creating small pools of liquid gold and bronze by diligently grinding sticks of Japanese sumi ink. Her ongoing experimentation with materiality has allowed her to develop a way to turn solid metal into a malleable and fluid material.  Whilst seeing photographs of the work can show how extraordinary they are, they really need to be seen to get the full effect of the fluidity, abstraction and form she portrays.

Sue Arrowsmith (b. 1968) trained at Goldsmiths College and subsequently has a huge following with many exhibitions in the UK and Europe.   Her work is held in many private and museum collections, notably The Arts Council, London, San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art and National Gallery of Berlin Kupferstichkabinett.
